May is National Physical Fitness Month—and IWCO Direct and Mail-Gard Like to Stay Fit

Michael Henry

In March, I discussed how important it is for Mail-Gard to exercise our clients’ print-to-mail applications so we’re always ready to step up to the plate in the event of a disaster. “Practice makes perfect,” and our continued testing helps ensure a seamless transition when your business suffers an interruption.

But that’s not the only kind of exercise that’s important to us. We also place a lot of importance on our employees’ physical health and well-being. Since May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, it seems appropriate to highlight some of our corporate initiatives that greatly support our team’s mental and physical fitness and contribute to our culture of excellence.

How National Physical Fitness Month Fits into Our Year-Round Culture

Under the leadership of our CEO, Jim Andersen, IWCO Direct has always placed a high value on staying active and being fit. If you drive past one of our facilities on any given day, you will see the parade of walkers around each building location. If you step into one of our on-site exercise rooms, you will come away impressed with some of the benefits  we offer. From ping-pong, table hockey games, and yoga rooms to fully equipped gyms with workout gear including spin rooms, stationary bikes, running machines, and weights, we’ve got it covered. Having lockers and showers in some facilities gives employees the option to exercise before or after work hours, or even during lunch breaks, so they can efficiently manage their work-life balance.

IWCO Direct also distributes a monthly internal “HOPE Health Letter” to every employee. One of this month’s articles cites Forbes & Yoga Journal to support a statement that “regular exercise can be the best medicine for the body, brain and emotional well-being. It releases chemicals that help reduce stress and improve, sleep, mood, and mental clarity.” Our business can be a very stressful and demanding one, and it’s to everyone’s benefit to encourage employees to exercise and feel good!

Focusing on Wellness in our Communities

Our recent acquisition by Steel Connect, part of Steel Partners Holdings L.P., further reinforces our dedication to the importance of physical fitness and wellness, and their culture of employee well-being aligns with our own. In fact, Steel Partners just announced the kick-off of SteelWell, an initiative designed to maximize the health and well-being of employees and their families, and offer opportunities for employees to create positive change in the communities where we work and live.

In addition, one of the Steel Partners’ holdings is the Steel Sports division, including the National Youth Baseball Championships (NYBC). Their goal is to encourage youth to get active and to educate kids on the benefits of healthy choices. Sports are a great connector. If you have ever had the chance to coach at the youth level you know it truly is rewarding! Coaching youth sports provides an opportunity to develop and mentor kids while teaching them life lessons like teamwork and respect that extend beyond the playing field.

Our fast-paced businesses require fast reactions. If your recovery plan needs to get into shape, Mail-Gard can help you with that. We hope our clients rest easier knowing that we’re doing all we can to nurture healthy teams that are ready to spring into action when life demands it. Contact me to talk or schedule time for a run.
