The annual EMA Spring Meeting is like a family reunion with all your favorite relatives in one special place. The theme of this year’s meeting, “Expanding the Possibilities,” telegraphs what EMA does best. It recognizes challenges, conducts economic and trends research to help members understand those challenges, and provides a forum to help turn them into opportunities.
As always, the meeting opened with an inspiring General Session. This one was led by Christopher Harrold, VP Creative Director of Mohawk Fine Papers, who walked through the recently published “Maker’s Guide to Envelopes” with a thought-provoking reminder of how printed communication is making an impact in today’s digital world.
But it was the awards part of the opening session that caused me to applaud loud and long when our own Kurt Ruppel, Director Postal Policy and Marketing Communications, was announced as the recipient of the Daniel H. Lipman Member of the Year Award. Each year the award recognizes an EMA member who exhibits leadership qualities within the organization and his or her own company.
The award is not given lightly. In order to even be considered, members must be active on at least two EMA committees, participate regularly in other EMA programs, and deliver creative and innovative thinking when it comes to EMA and the industry. Kurt’s postal knowledge can only be described as epic. We affectionately refer to him as our postal wonk (or postal geek or postal nerd). But it’s his willingness to share his expertise with our internal teams, our clients, and industry associations that makes him so worthy of this award.
It was truly a treat to be in the room when the award was announced. It seemed to be apparent to everyone except Kurt that he was the one being described. (He later told a colleague that until “EMA board member” was included in the description, he didn’t realize his name was about to be mentioned.)
It is an honor and a privilege to share Kurt’s achievement with readers of SpeakingDIRECT. We couldn’t be more proud to have him as an epic member of the IWCO Direct team. You can congratulate Kurt by clicking here and sending him a note.
