RIMS 2017 Shines a New Light on Familiar Risk Management Concerns

Michael Henry

Last week, America’s birthplace, Philadelphia, played host to a number of important events. The 2017 NFL draft took place on the city’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway, while only a short distance away on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, the nation’s best track and field athletes gathered to showcase their talents at the 123rd Penn Relays. Not to be overshadowed by sporting events during this busy week, the RIMS 2017 annual conference was also in full swing at the Convention Center.

Philly was certainly busy—a word that also describes RIMS 2017. The program featured 168 educational opportunities, presentations from nearly 350 subject matter experts, 400 exhibitors, and more than 10,000 risk professionals in attendance from over 60 countries!

Resiliency, Disease Control, and More at RIMS 2017

A sand sculptor puts the finishing touches on the iconic Liberty Bell at RIMS 2017 in Philadelphia.

This year’s sessions had some great inspirational speakers including Michael J. Fox, the award-winning actor and advocate for a cure for Parkinson’s Disease while bravely battling this syndrome. He spoke about how life can throw you a curveball, but that hasn’t stopped him from experiencing new opportunities and working through challenges―lessons we can all apply, every day.

It was tough to decide which educational sessions to attend. The categories ranged from career development to technology and risk. RIMS is the only conference I can think of that exposes us to the latest thinking about preparing for risk in areas we never thought about 18 months ago. For example, where else could you hear experts address this question: “Tesla Versus Google: What if Uber and ZipCar Had a Baby?”

Just a few years ago, pandemic planning was focused on SARS and Avian flu as they spread into the mainstream consciousness. RIMS reminded us that we need to be prepared for new and emerging diseases that may threaten the workplace. Sessions like, “Ebola. Zika. Is Your Organization Ready for What Comes Next?” helped us consider what’s needed to build a communicable illness plan that responds to any outbreak.

Staying at the Forefront of Business Recovery

While RIMS is a great time to catch up with some of our insurance customers and leaders, it also gives us the opportunity to meet and greet new partners. Mail-Gard’s attendance at events like RIMS, the risk industry’s biggest event of the year, serves as a great opportunity to help provide your business the best solutions in risk management. It’s always interesting to see the reactions when a business leader is educated on the risk of not having a proper disaster recovery solution in place.

If you stopped by the Mail-Gard booth during your time in Philly while attending RIMS 2017, I want to thank you for your visit. Mail-Gard is the industry leader in recovery services, and we’re that much more prepared to serve our clients and partners by attending events like RIMS. We’re always ready to help your team put together an effective recovery plan that is structured to meet your business needs. Our seasoned experts will make sure that the on-boarding process is easy and ensure that the implementation is solid.
