IWCO Direct’s focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility continues to grow. We are in our tenth year as an FSC®-Chain-of-Custody certified multi-site organization, but we continue to find new ways to improve our environmental efforts to support our clients’ environmental requirements and our own obligations to Mother Earth. Our commitment to sustainability has always been integrated across our platform. This allows us to share best practices across our seven sites, and we’d like to recognize Earth Day with a brief summary of what that means for our company, our clients, and the environment.
The IWCO Direct Environmental Council
In 2016, we launched an Environmental Council to lead, coordinate, and enhance our sustainability efforts. Members of the Council represent all facilities across our platform, as well as a cross-section of disciplines and roles within IWCO Direct. The members are passionate about sustainability issues and ensure we are taking a long-term view toward meeting the environmental needs of our communities and the natural world. The Council also provides guidance toward providing environmental stewardship best practices for our clients.
The IWCO Direct Environmental Council meets regularly and engages additional resources across our platform as needed. For instance, we utilize industry experts to provide support and education on topics related to environmental stewardship. We also work with operations teams, safety, human resources, recyclers, and supply partners to implement common strategies. The Council provides structure within our organization and supports Continuous Improvement related to training, tracking, reporting, and other objectives.
Doing Our Part for the Environment
There are many initiatives and ideas coordinated through the Environmental Council. We are sponsoring our second annual “clean up” event to provide awareness and beautify the IWCO Direct grounds at each of our facilities. We have elevated awareness of our recycling efforts, and were recognized by our primary recycling partner for the materials we recycled in 2016 in Minnesota and Pennsylvania.
Through these recycling efforts, we were able to save:
- 372,572 trees
- 153,412,000 gallons of water
- 7,626,768 gallons of oil
- 89,855,600 Kilowatt hours of electricity
One of the primary areas of focus for the Environmental Council has been a broader understanding of our carbon footprint. We have supported site requirements and combined reporting efforts to build common measurements across our platform. This will allow us to utilize established baselines, analyze, and set goals to better manage our footprint in the future.
I’m excited to be a part of the inaugural Environmental Council at IWCO Direct. We are looking forward to increased awareness of our progress internally and externally, actively enhancing our clients’ objectives, and supporting community efforts. Our Continuous Improvement efforts, such as energy efficient lighting and FSC-certified house stock, will always be a primary focus. We see to education for our employees, clients, and partners, and continue to be a sustainable organization.
In the spirit of these efforts, I’d like to invite you to look at a new infographic released by Two Sides this week in honor of this year’s Earth Day. It illustrates the importance of understanding the facts about the sustainability of paper-based communications. Please take a moment to check out this information and share the message with others. Happy Earth Day 2017!
