How IWCO Direct Supports the PROP Food Shelf and How You Can Too

One of the ways IWCO Direct is involved in our communities is by supporting People Reaching Out to People (PROP). PROP is predominantly known for their food shelf services, which helps feed 1,100 families in Eden Prairie and Chanhassen, MN. (If Chanhassen sounds familiar, that’s because it’s where IWCO Direct’s corporate headquarters are located.) I’ve had the privilege to represent IWCO Direct on PROP’s Marketing Committee for the past few years.

PROP Raises Funds at 6th Annual Empty Bowls Event

Recently, PROP held its 6th annual “Empty Bowls” event, where community members gathered over a simple meal of soup and bread and took home a handmade bowl as a reminder of the empty bowls in our community. IWCO Direct was a silver sponsor for the event, and we were pleased to see more than 800 bowls of soup being served and community members gathering for such a great cause.

The purpose of Empty Bowls was to raise awareness and funds. It’s not easy to put a number on awareness, but we raised nearly $49,000 by the end of the night. That number is impressive, but it’s not enough. It takes about 1,000 pounds of food (which is equivalent to about $1,000) to fill the PROP food shelves for one day. So while $49,000 may seem like a lot, and as proud as we are to have helped raise it, that money will only be around for a few short weeks.

PROP Sponsor for a Day

In honor of this event, IWCO Direct decided to participate in PROP’s new initiative, “Sponsor a Day,” where businesses, organizations, and individuals can pay to stock the shelves at PROP for a day. We chose March 17, the day our company was founded. (Speaking of which—happy 48th birthday IWCO Direct!)

Having a group dedicated to supporting the food shelf for an entire day helps take the pressure off one-time monetary donations, helps ensure a fully stocked supply of food, and allows PROP to fund more of their other services, such as youth scholarships, housing and financial services, and employment help.

How You Can Help #SQUASHHUNGER

For those looking to support PROP, your timing couldn’t be better. March is Minnesota FoodShare month, where every pound of food and dollar raised will be matched. This year’s theme, “Let’s squash HUNGER together!” has inspired PROP to set some lofty goals. They hope to raise $45,000 and collect 100,000 pounds of food and are depending on the community to meet the challenge.
