Printing Sustainability

Making Large-Scale Production and Printing Sustainability Work in Harmony

Karen Weil

What do you think of when you read or hear the word “sustainability?” We tend to treat the word as an opportunity—to make more, waste less, and do better by the world that we live in. Because our industry is indelibly tied to natural resources, we are under particular scrutiny when it comes to environmental responsibility. We’re constantly on the lookout for best practices, opportunities, and issues that impact that relationship.

Supporting Sustainability at IWCO Direct and for Our Clients

In the past year, we’ve reinforced our approach to sustainability as a corporate commitment. In 2016, we established the IWCO Direct Environmental Council, a group represented by a mix of disciplines, roles, and locations dedicated exclusively to our sustainability efforts. We also held our first annual Earth Day event last year, an occasion we plan to revisit every year with an outdoor or community event.

To make real progress in environmental responsibility, we first have to be able to measure our impact. That’s why we documented the baseline carbon footprint for all IWCO Direct facilities last year. This will allow us to set our goals and measure progress as we support and update our sustainability practices.

As one result of our sustainability strategies, IWCO Direct was named one of the top 10 printers by the Canopy Blueline Report, a ranking of the largest printers in North America based on sustainability standards, practices, and the eco-friendly options we offer our clients. Our efforts haven’t gone unnoticed, and we’re proud to be recognized for our team’s progress.

Working Toward a Better Tomorrow (and an Even Better 2017)

Sustainability is a constant commitment, not a race to the finish line. Even as we work to adopt the most current and efficient practices, we realize that each success is followed by a new challenge—and we build our standards and reputation on facing each one head-on.

A few of the milestones we’re setting our sights on in 2017 include enhanced carbon footprint tracking, comprehensive recycling initiatives, and continued certification through the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®). We’re tracking an increased interest among our clients in FSC-certified products and services, and we’re proud our supply chain offers them several options for their direct mail efforts.

Catch a Free Webinar to Find Out How You Can Put Sustainability into Practice

We hope you’ll tune in to a free webinar on sustainability hosted by Printing Impressions and In-plant Graphics and sponsored by Canon Solutions America on March 23, where IWCO Direct VP Marketing & Corporate Communications Debora Haskel and I will help identify sustainability strategies for in-house and commercial printers.

Cigna’s Stephen Stein and In-Plant Graphic’s editor-in-chief, Bob Neubauer, will also participate and facilitate as we address the importance of sustainability, how it fits into IWCO Direct’s value proposition, identify our current practices, and share our results and achievements to date. Attendees will also learn how to better communicate that print is a sustainable process and be introduced to new technologies that can help reduce your environmental footprint.

If you’d like to know more about what we do to promote sustainability at IWCO Direct, please contact me for more information and get started today.
