How Our Employees Get into the Spirit of Thanksgiving

Bev Lohs

The Roman philosopher Cicero said, “A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues.” I’m reminded of that quote this time of year more than any other; Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful and to think about all the special people who have touched our lives. As we sit down to give thanks, we are reminded of how truly blessed we are. Many families take this opportunity to give back to those less fortunate, and our IWCO Direct family is no different

Each of our locations – Little Falls and Chanhassen, MN, Hamburg and Warminster, PA – has a different approach to community outreach, but all are driven by the same passion for being active in our communities and making positive contributions.

Here are a few of the ways we’ve shown our commitment to our communities across IWCO Direct facilities:

For Our Four-Legged Friends in Little Falls

Employees at our Little Falls, MN, facility joined together this year to raise funds for some friends who are sometimes forgotten. Those furry friends are housed at the Morrison County Animal Humane Society, which cares for dogs and cats in need of a loving home. Since Thanksgiving is about giving and community outreach, what better time than now to look at adopting a furry friend to join your family at (or maybe near) the table on Thanksgiving?

Chanhassen Comes Together for United Way

With a number of special fundraising events, our Chanhassen employees raised $27,558 for Greater Twin Cities United Way, with proceeds going to multiple charitable programs throughout the Twin Cities. Events included a company picnic with various games, prize boards and a silent auction, for which IWCO Direct departments put together various baskets with themes such as “relaxation,” “Minnesota Vikings” and “family game night.” Other silent auction items included parking spots, golf outings and tickets for various Minnesota-based sporting events.

Diversifying Community Outreach in Hamburg

In Hamburg, PA, IWCO Direct employees found a number of ways to be involved with the community in 2016. They played bingo and ran a basket raffle for Berks County and Schuylkill County United Way, bringing in $4,859; supported the Northern Berks Food Pantry through Books Are Fun, donating 10% of sales profits to the organization which provides food to local residents; and in the next few weeks, they’ll be decking out an Angel Tree with the Salvation Army, selecting and donating gifts to area children just in time for Christmas. The Hamburg HR team also visits two local schools every year to educate 6th- through 12th-grade students on career paths and employment options as they prepare their post-high school plans.

Warminster Gives Back

In August, we held our annual “Stuff the Bus” campaign in Warminster, PA, joining forces with Wells Fargo and several other sponsors to kick off this charity drive by stuffing backpacks with school supplies. The recipients of the backpacks were children whose families struggle to obtain the back-to-school materials that are necessary. We delivered five banker boxes full of these supplies and assisted in meeting the 2016 United Way goal of stuffing 2,000 backpacks.

Our annual November food pantry drive is underway in Warminster, donating food staples and family necessities, like baby food, formula and diapers, to less fortunate families. Just so we ensure that “furry family members” are not forgotten in our community outreach efforts, pet food is included in the drive, as well.

Those who work outside our facilities also contribute to our annual giving, including raising funds for The Polar Plunge and Special Olympics Minnesota. Some even fly to Minnesota to take a dip into the icy waters!

I’m extremely proud of all the creative and meaningful ways our employees give back to our communities. I’m also excited to see the generosity of our employees as we head into the holiday season and begin new fundraisers, including our toy drives, hat and mitten collection and more. From all of us at IWCO Direct, we want to wish you a Thanksgiving filled with love, cheer and safe travels!
