Update on Inkjet Technology

Dave Johannes

Next month I will be attending the Inkjet Summit to connect with my peers to discuss the latest inkjet technology software and solutions and how these advances will enrich our clients’ marketing strategies. In the meantime, we have several exciting updates to our color digital platform currently underway. With digital inkjet technology transforming our industry so quickly, we wanted to share some of these latest enhancements.

New High Definition Ink Set

For the last 18 months, IWCO Direct has been partnering with Canon to develop a new ink set for their ColorStream devices. After many rounds of testing, we achieved an ink set that better meets the needs of our direct marketing clients.

Canon is calling their new ink set ColorStream High Definition Ink. The new HD ink set features stronger, richer pigments that provide more depth of color with less ink saturation. The ink also provides an overall improvement of color gamut by approximately 10%, which is most noticeable in the red and blue spectrums.

Additionally, the new ink has improved runability characteristics by reducing buildup and marking. Thanks to our partnership with Canon, IWCO Direct will be the first customer in the U.S. to install this ink for live production.

Beginning in early March, we will start in-depth testing of the new HD ink set for our ColorStream 3900 digital presses at the Canon Experience Center (CEC) in Boca Raton, FL. There, we will perform comparative benchmarking tests of the new HD ink set versus the old ink set, as well as profiling a variety of papers in order to validate paper performance and develop paper profiles so we can expedite the onboarding of HD ink to our production equipment in both Chanhassen and Hamburg.

New Color Management Workflow

In conjunction with the release of new HD inks for the ColorStream 3900s, we will make some adjustments to our color management workflow to enhance our ability to match color reproduction across various print technologies. This will give us flexibility and capabilities that we have not had in the past while simplifying our current workflow with regard to intake and management of digital assets.

pressSIGN7 Enterprise Color Management

In addition to our color management workflow changes, the rollout of pressSIGN7, an enterprise color management quality control solution, will begin during the first quarter. The pressSIGN7 software enables us to better manage quality by providing functionality not available in our current software.

Some of these enhancements are color measurement, paper standards validation, job settings and the ability to predict ink dry-back, as well as scoring and reporting capabilities. It also measures consistency and color quality. Another great benefit is that it is G7 certified. All of these enhancements will greatly support the quality and efficiency of our digital print platform and help our clients improve their direct mail campaigns.

This post began with next month’s Inkjet Summit and I’ll close with another great inkjet conference – thINK 2016. thINK is an independent community of Canon Solutions America production print customers, solution partners and print industry experts. Recently, I was honored to be named thINK Vice President and 2016 conference chair. I’ll be writing more about thINK 2016 in the coming months as we finalize the agenda.
