NPF Day 1 Highlights: MTAC Celebrates 50 Years & Focus on Mail Quality Solutions

The mailing industry has made its way to sunny southern California, where the 2015 National Postal Forum (NPF) kicked-off yesterday at the Anaheim Convention Center. Anaheim is a great venue for the NPF – a much needed break for our friends who survived the brutal winter in the Northeast, and who can complain about being across the street from Disneyland? This event feels a little like a family reunion as we greet customers, vendors and Postal Service contacts. I always appreciate that family feeling, even if the mailing community is a sometimes loud, raucous and argumentative family.

MTAC Celebrates 50th Anniversary

One of the special events at this year’s NPF is the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Postmaster General’s Mailers Technical Advisory Committee (MTAC). MTAC provides a venue for the Postal Service to share technical information with mailers, and to receive our advice and recommendations on mail-related products and services. MTAC is composed of the major mailing associations and other organizations whose members depend on the Postal Service to conduct their business, and since 1965 has been a source of industry input on important plans and actions by the Postal Service.

While MTAC has historically focused on technological issues, its mission has been expanded to enhance the value of mail and develop new growth opportunities for the mutual benefit of the mailing industry and the Postal Service.

MTAC will be recognized during Monday’s general session as well as at an anniversary reception for MTAC members and guests Tuesday evening. The May MTAC meeting is being held Wednesday in conjunction with NPF, rather than its usual location of USPS headquarters in Washington, D.C.

My colleague, Bob Rosser, and I are proud to be members of MTAC, where we represent the Association for Postal Commerce and the Envelope Manufacturers Association, respectively. We’re looking forward to the 50th anniversary celebration and the continued success of MTAC well into the future.

Opening Day

There was strong attendance throughout the first day of the NPF. The hot topic this year seems to be Mailer Scorecards and Mail Quality Reports. There are a number of sessions that will help mailers understand how to track the quality of their mail and prepare for new programs such as eInduction and Seamless Acceptance.

Another important subject we will be hearing about at the NPF is service performance and how the Postal Service is recovering from the performance gaps that occurred earlier this year as a result of operational changes within the processing network, coupled with the severe winter. There are also many sessions on innovative ways to get mail opened, provide a clear and compelling call to action (CTA) and make it easy for recipients to respond to direct mail offers.
