Student Backpack Drives Help Meet Local Community Needs

Bev Lohs

IWCO Direct employees have once again shown their commitment to ensuring educational success for students in our communities. This fall employees in our Chanhassen, MN and Warminster, PA facilities participated in drives to provide backpacks full of school supplies for students in need in our communities.

Chanhassen Employees Reach Out to Meet Growing Need

Our Chanhassen campus collected school supply items for People Reaching Out to People (PROP), a local nonprofit organization that helps Eden Prairie and Chanhassen community members in need.

For PROP’s School Drive, IWCO Direct employees donated money, backpacks, pencils, and more over the span of two weeks. These donations helped meet the need of the 662 kids from kindergarten through 12th grade who signed up with PROP to receive supplies. This is a 26% increase of individuals who registered with PROP for school supplies last year.

To help ensure that every student’s needs are met, PROP often distributes lists of the items that are in most dire need. This year, some of those products included binders, folders, and loose leaf paper, but by far the most needed item was adult-sized backpacks for high school students.

As a Company goal, each Chanhassen facility pledged to donate at least 10 backpacks, for a total of 30. In the end, the campus exceeded its backpack goal and was able to provide PROP with 36 backpacks and other crucial school supplies.

Warminster Associates “Stuff the Bus”

For the third consecutive year, our Warminster associates supported the United Way “Stuff the Bus” project. Stuff the Bus is a school supply drive that supports homeless children in need throughout Bucks County. At any given time there are at least 20,000 children in Bucks County struggling to have their basic needs met. Literally every single school district in Bucks County serves homeless students through this campaign.

One of the biggest priorities of this fundraiser is gathering school materials to provide these students with the tools they need to succeed in the classroom. Our Warminster employees held a variety of fundraising events, as well as donating school supply items and making monetary donations. In its three-year involvement with this campaign, our Warminster employees have donated the equivalent of 50 – 60 backpacks full of school supplies.

Last year, our Warminster team helped the “Stuff the Bus” campaign distribute more than $17,400 worth of back-to-school supplies (742 filled backpacks) to Bucks County students in need, and it was recently reported that this year’s initiative has surpassed the previous year’s in both donated items and monetary donations.

We know educational success is key to success later in life. Thanks to all IWCO Direct employees who donated and helped local students start the year off right!
