American Heart Month Reminds Us to Take Charge of Our Health

Dana Ohnsorg

February is American Heart Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. However, the good news is that heart disease is preventable and controllable. This month is a reminder to look after your health and take care of your heart. At IWCO Direct, we are taking this opportunity to encourage employees to take charge of their wellbeing and keep up with their fitness resolutions.

Health is deeply connected to a person’s wellbeing physically, emotionally and mentally. In order to help improve the lives of our employees, we try to give them resources to become better aware of their health and know how to improve it.

Over the past few years, IWCO Direct has supported healthy lifestyles by sponsoring on-site biometric screenings to assist employees with understanding their current health status. These tests have given us a better snapshot of the overall health status of our employees. In some cases, a few employees were advised of serious health concerns from their test results and have met with their doctors to correct or proactively manage their condition.

The tests have also given us an indication of areas in which we can provide support. The data shows that our biggest opportunity for health improvement is in lowering BMI numbers and blood pressure management with our employees.

Our 2014 goal is to move wellness from just being a program to becoming part of the everyday work environment. Because each location has different health needs and interests based upon opportunities within their area, local wellness committees are being established. These committees will help assist in launching wellness programs of interest to our employees.

In the spirit of American Heart Month, these committees will focus on areas of movement and weight management as well as education on managing blood pressure to help support and maintain heart health. Each location will have the flexibility to set up programs that work best for their employees. For instance, some locations may sponsor an At-Work Weight Watchers program, while another may hold an on-site seminar. The details for the official 2014 program are still being finalized, but we are now discussing how to more effectively support those with health concerns to make improvements while helping the healthy to maintain their health.
