Partnership with OfficeMax Enhances Sustainability Efforts

Karen Weil

We’ve written about our sustainability efforts, which include implementing Lean Manufacturing principles across our platform and recycling a variety of materials from our daily operations. A recent enhancement to these efforts was naming OfficeMax our corporate supply vendor for all IWCO Direct locations, as their environmental policy closely aligns with our sustainability goals.

OfficeMax’s environmental sustainability program is called OfficeMax Workplace™, which works to “promote sustainability and minimize the adverse environmental impacts of our operations and products.” Thirty percent of their inventory is considered environmentally responsible. Through our agreement, IWCO Direct employees can choose from more than 5,000 environmentally preferable products, including items such as note pads, folders, tape dispensers, trash bags, binders, toners, etc.

RECYCLE_GREENA useful feature of OfficeMax Workplace is the ability to look for the most environmentally friendly product options on our contract list, which are marked with special symbols to identify them. Buyers can also narrow their search for products categorized as “Recycled Goods” when ordering online. OfficeMax will refill, recycle or reuse certain products such as empty ink and toner cartridges. They also offer Asset Disposition, which recycles old computers and other electronics, which can be a hassle.

Another attractive feature of OfficeMax Workplace is its shipping program called Delivery Frequency. By pooling several orders with similar destinations into one shipment, OfficeMax is able to reduce deliveries, which lessens environmental impact and waste. OfficeMax also has distribution centers within 90 miles of any of our facilities, which cuts down on transportation concerns and lessons the carbon footprint of all parties.

Finally, to help quantify our results and evaluate our own environmental efforts, we receive reports from OfficeMax on our recycled product purchases. For example, we know that our “green spend” is 25% of our total spend so far this year.

We are excited about our partnership with OfficeMax and what it means for our sustainability efforts. It’s another great example of how we collaborate with others to focus on sustainability.
