Déjà vu – PODi AppForum Exceeds Expectations Yet Again

If you’ve been reading my blogs for the past two years, you know every year I say the PODi AppForum continues to exceed my expectations. So I don’t know why I’m surprised to say that 2013 was no exception. In fact, the energy in the sessions and at the networking events was stronger than ever. Once again, I was honored to be a Track Chair and could not have been more pleased with the attendance in the Cross-Media track sessions (some were standing room only). I was also pleased by the participation of the attendees who asked a lot of questions – not just of the presenters, but of each other.

Rab Govil’s keynote on Tuesday morning was inspiring and had everyone talking later about the elephant and the rider. We were reminded to promote joy, not fear, because fear perpetuates mediocrity. Rab told the audience that based on his experiences – both good and bad – success comes from developing a “Growth Mindset” by exercising our “ability muscles.” And by the way, our ability muscles require 10,000 hours to develop properly. Mark Potter had every head nodding when he said, “No one knows exactly what to do.”

It was clear that the winning presentation title in the Cross Media track was, “Let’s Cut the QRap! QR Codes: Success and Failure.” The presentation by Paul Strack and James Mullany provided great insight into best practices for using QR codes and some very entertaining examples of how not to use QR codes. One of the key takeaways of the track was “just print” or “just digital” will not be as effective as the combination of the channels.

Finally, the session “Innovations in Interactive Print” showed the evolution of QR codes to digital watermarks from Digimarc, a new product from Ricoh called “Clickable Paper,” and a great case study demonstrating enhanced customer engagement with Aurasma. Based on prior experience, these new technologies that preview at PODi become part of our worlds by the next AppForum.  Hope to see you there next year!
