I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and great start to the new year. As we all embrace new beginnings in 2013, it’s a perfect time to think about how we can help others create new beginnings. January is National Mentoring Month – 31 days dedicated to the nationwide need for mentors in the lives of young people. The Harvard School of Public Health and MENTOR created the initiative in 2002 to heighten mentoring awareness and prompt individuals to volunteer.
IWCO Direct’s company-wide commitment to mentoring has always been an important cause. All of our employees have the opportunity to impact a young person’s life through various mentoring programs. We believe mentoring helps kids avoid risky behavior and achieve their dreams while improving their social interaction and self-esteem. In fact, research has shown that young people with mentors are less likely to begin using drugs and skip school. They’re also more likely to graduate from high school, go to college and be hopeful about the future. These are outcomes we all feel good about – outcomes we strive to help make a reality for those young people in our lives.
IWCO Direct has continued its relationship with the Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota (MPM) over the years and was a main sponsor of its Awards Celebration and 13th Annual Mentoring Conference on October 14-15, 2012 at the University of Minnesota. The conference was a day-long event that featured workshops on a wide variety of mentoring topics as well as keynote presentations on “Mentoring All of our Nation’s Youth” and “Why Mentoring Matters.”
Mentorship is a cause we feel strongly about. Nearly anyone who has achieved a certain level of success has had great mentors along the way. In my case it was Jim Mayes. If you haven’t gotten involved already, please consider becoming a mentor this year. Whether it’s a youth in need, or a young person just entering your chosen field, you’re likely to discover you benefit from the relationship just as much as the person you mentor.
