In recent months we’ve discussed our recycling efforts at IWCO Direct and begun highlighting the efforts of our supply partners to reduce their environmental footprint.
Today we recognize Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. (SSCC) who was recently acquired by RockTenn Company. The legacy SSCC company has been one of our main carton suppliers that actively promote environmental stability, and we look forward to working with RockTenn as they have been committed to environmental stewardship and sustainable business practices for more than a hundred years. Here are a few of the top efforts of the legacy SSCC company:
- SSCC is a member of the Chicago Climate Exchange and has completed their phase two commitment to reduce greenhouse emissions from a 1999-2001 baseline. SSCC more than doubled their commitment of a 6% reduction.
- An overall average 66% of the energy used at their paper mills comes from bio mass from their own operations, saw mills or logging operations.
- In 2010, SSCC’s entire system of twelve pulp and paper mills met chain-of-custody certification. It is only the second integrated paper company to have their entire mill system certified to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). Their U.S. mills are also certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiatives (SFI) chain-of-custody standard.
We will continue to spotlight the noteworthy sustainability practices of our supply partners throughout the year. If you can highlight any innovative ways to be better stewards of the environment, we hope you’ll share them in the comments section.
